According to Cancer Australia, in 2023 approximately 2,576 Australians were newly diagnosed with stomach cancer. Stomach cancer is often slow growing and may not exhibit symptoms in its early stages.
The most common symptoms of stomach cancer include:
- indigestion
- difficult or painful swallowing
- Fullness or bloating after eating only a small amount
- Appetite loss
- nausea
- vomiting (with or without blood)
- black or bloody stools
- pain in the upper abdomen, especially when eating
- a swollen abdomen caused by fluid accumulation
- unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue
- Anaemia (low red blood cell count)
It is important to note that there are many unrelated conditions that can cause the above symptoms. If you have any of the above symptoms or are concerned about your risk of developing pancreatic cancer please schedule an appointment with your health care provider to discuss this urgently.
