Managing the Holiday Season Whilst Impacted by Cancer

Christmas is almost here and amongst all of the joy and excitement it is important to recognise that this time of year can bring with it a number of challenges for people impacted by cancer. Following a cancer diagnosis the entire Christmas experience can change for yourself and for your loved ones.

Managing your expectations of this time of year and what you prioritise can assist in keeping this time of year a special time for you and your family. The team at COUCH understand that this looks different for everyone and we are here to support you.

Below are some suggestions which may assist in managing the festive season and the complexities that accompany a cancer diagnosis:

Prioritise – Prioritise the events that matter most and try not to commit to hosting or attending events that will lead you too expend too much energy.

Rest and Recover – Schedule in times to rest physically and emotionally. Reframe your expectations of yourself and try to schedule activities for the time of the day that you generally have the most energy. Try not to overcommit and do not feel guilty if you have to cancel plans with family or friends, they will understand.

Eat Healthy and Keep Moving – continuing to eat a balanced, nutritious diet and participate in regular exercise will assist in managing fatigue and emotions. Scheduling in time for exercise and mindfulness activities, such as meditation will help you to manage stress levels and take some time out to nurture yourself. The Cancer Council have a free Meditation Podcast that can be accessed anytime by following this link Podcast: Meditation and Relaxation | Cancer Council NSW

Talk with your team – Talk with your healthcare team regarding closures over the holiday period, concerns you may have and alternate arrangements should you become unwell. Some private clinics may close for an extended period of time so it is important to make sure you are aware of who to contact should you have a concern and make sure you have enough medications to get you through the closure period. If you have a special event coming up that coincides with a medical appointment talk to your team as soon as possible to see if you are able to re-schedule. Most importantly if you become unwell or are concerned about your health please speak with your GP or seek urgent medical assistance by seeing presenting to the emergency department or calling 000 rather than waiting for your treatment centre to re-open.

Don’t be afraid to seek support – Let friends and family know how they can assist you over the holiday period. Don’t be ashamed to keep plans simple and delegate tasks such as shopping, hosting, cooking etc. Most importantly be aware that there is additional support available if you need it.

The COUCH Wellness Centre will be closed from 19/12/24 until 02/01/25. If you would like to have a chat about any additional support services or organisations relevant to you and your family to assist over the closure please call our Care Team on 07 4032 0820 or email admin@couch.org.au
