COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES FOR CANCER CARE – TAI CHI

Tai Chi Classes at the COUCH Wellness Centre in Cairns provide people living with cancer and undergoing cancer treatment with the opportunity to engage in a calm, soothing activity that helps to promote wellbeing for the mind and body.

Tai Chi is a complementary therapy that combines gentle movement, deep breathing techniques and meditation. Tai Chi movements create stability in the body, reflecting an ancient Chinese concept of balance known as Yin and Yang.

The focus is on holding different poses which helps to loosen and strengthen the muscles. Tai chi is a very gentle practice that is easily modified for groups that are less mobile such as people undergoing cancer treatments or recovering from surgery.

Classes start with a warm up and then your instructor will talk you through the different poses. The movements are simple to start with, then become progressively harder, with many parts of the body needing to move together to achieve the pose. Classes end with cooling down and relaxation.

Studies have shown that practising Tai Chi can result in improved quality of life, balance, agility, flexibility and muscle tone in cancer survivors. It can also help to reduce anxiety, depression and stress.
