Magaritaville comes back to Cairns!”

Get set for the return of Cairns’ most colourful tropical party of the year at Yorkey’s Knob Boating Club …

Barbary Coasters’ 7th Annual Jimmy Buffett Parrothead Party on Sunday 2nd May.

The fun kicks off at 2pm in great Tropical style when Tiki Dancer ‘Terina & the Polynesian showband’ will once again open the show & get hips swinging! From then on, Barbary Coasters take the stage with a full-on show of all the best Jimmy Buffett music that will have fans

“up & partying & singing along” to every song!

Once again we can expect some crazy tropical games, WILD outfits and some great prizes.

Now in it’s 7th year, the day has become a firm favourite on the YKBC calendar, and once again a full house is expected – bookings are already confirmed from dedicated Parrotheads from Melbourne and Sydney and the fun keeps rolling with shows booked for Townsville, Airlie beach and Bowen in coming months.

Barbary Coasters’ “Parrothead Party” is now officially recognised and sanctioned by Phins Downunder (The Australian Parrothead Club) who are the official arm of “Parrotheads In Paradise Inc” (PHIP) which is the huge Jimmy Buffett fan club/ fundraising movement throughout the USA. This ensures that the show (and band) not only receives recognition throughout Australia but to all associated groups in the US as well!

Again this year the event will be raising funds in support of COUCH – (Cairns Oncology Unit Cairns Hospital) in the form of Gold Coin donations throughout the day.

Joining Barbary Coasters (Nikki Lowmass & Vance Fahey) this year will be the talents of Nasser Selimi on congas, bongos and everything percussion, and everybody is expected to don their WILDEST tropical gear (good taste NOT a requirement) & get ready to have fun, dance, sing and pop a gold coin in the tin for COUCH.

Of particular interest to COUCH was the progression of Block E located on corner of Digger & Lake Streets which will house the new Liz Plummer Cancer Care Centre.

The first three levels of Block E will contain office and cancer treatment space, above which will be 5 levels of car parking. Block E will be connected by air-bridge across Lake Street to the existing Hospital.

Ground Level will contain the Radiotherapy Unit (bunkers) and the First Level will house the balance of cancer treatment facilities including Chemotherapy. The Third Level will accommodate the FNQ Hospital Foundation offices and other administration.

The construction is on schedule to be completed in late 2010 whence the car park will open, allowing for demolition of the existing Car Park opposite. Fit-out of the Liz Plummer Cancer Care Centre will begin immediately for a scheduled opening in first quarter of 2011.

New ultrasound machine saves patients trip to Brisbane

Cairns Base Hospital has a new machine for helping diagnose lung cancer conditions thanks to the generosity of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation and COUCH.

The hospital foundation and COUCH (Committee for the Oncology Unit Cairns Hospital) jointly funded the new, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) $300,000 machine.

An endobronchial ultrasound is an important diagnostic tool for the evaluation and diagnosis of lung cancer and peripheral nodules.

Cairns Base Hospital currently has a conventional videobronchoscopy service but does not have an endobronchial ultrasound machine.

COUCH chairman Charlie Woodward said COUCH had been established with the express aim of improving services for cancer patients in Cairns and minimising the requirement for them to have to travel elsewhere for treatment.

“These patients should not have to undergo the stress of having to travel away from their family and friends at a time when they are also dealing with their life-threatening condition,” Mr Woodward said.

“We decided that helping fund this machine for Cairns Base Hospital was a good way of pursuing our commitment to the people of Far North Queensland.”

FNQ Hospital Foundation General Manager Tony Franz said the foundation was happy to be involved in helping fund the new EBUS machine.

“The foundation is regarded now as the Far North’s leading charity and our aim is to help improve health services throughout the region in any way we can,” he said.

Cairns Base Hospital Thoracic Medicine registrar Dr Stephen Vincent said the new EBUS machine would save around 30-40 patients a year a trip to Brisbane for further testing for their condition.

“The Far North has a higher than State average in lung cancer incidence and mortality, especially within the Indigenous population,” Dr Vincent said.

“For various reasons, including cultural and personal, some patients will elect not to travel to Brisbane for further testing, which generally then has an adverse effect on their condition.

“By being able to do this sort of additional testing, we will be able to improve these people’s health outcomes.

“The machine also will be useful in a number of other diagnostic areas and will probably be used on at least 200-250 people a year.”
